The Austrian Jakob Schubert manages the first repetition of the Chris Sharma route „El Bon Combat“ in Cova de l’ocell from the year 2015. The „El Bon Combat“ is located just 40 minutes from Barcelona and was bolted by Martí Iglesias Galobart. The 25 meter long overhanging route consists of conglomerate rock. The difficulty is based on several 8A Boulder problems connected with poor rests points. Jakob Schubert would suggest the difficulty of hard 9a +!
Jakob himself says: „I know it’s easy to not think about it and just take the grade of the first ascensionist which in this case is 9b/+ but I feel the responsibility to have more thoughts about it. For me it felt easier from the first day I tried it and I would guess it is a hard 9a+. Curious what others will think.“
Jakob is one of the leading competitive climbers in the world and could win the title in the lead as well as in the combination at his home world championship. The 27-year-old Austrian has already climbed three 9b’s and seven 9a + routes.
